What does SPF mean?

The abbreviation SPF on sun care packaging stands for Sun Protection Factor, and refers to how well the sunscreen protects against UV radiation. Because UV radiation can still penetrate through your sunscreen and into your skin, the SPF number on the packaging gives you a rough indication of how long it will take for your skin to turn red when exposed to sunlight.

Theoretically, if you use a sunscreen with an SPF 20, it will prevent your skin from getting red for approximately 20 times longer than if you had not used a sunscreen. So for example, if you normally start to burn within 10 minutes of being in sunlight, the sunscreen with an SPF 20 will prevent burning for approximately 200 minutes, or 3 hours and 20 minutes. Using a lower SPF means you have to apply sunscreen more often.
